Book Review: Khari - Journeys Through Kachchh by Sujatha padmanabhan and Shruthi Ramakrishna

July 12, 2018

Don't miss Khari - Journeys Through Kachchh by Sujatha Padmanabhan and Shruthi Ramakrishna. It is one of the most spectacular reading journeys your child will ever take.

Khari - Journeys through Kachchh by Sujatha Padmanabhan and Shruthi Ramakrishna and illustrated by Kalyani Ganapathy was first published in Gujarathi by Kalpavriksh to teach as part of localized environment education material for schools in Kachchh.

Khari, a young Demoiselle Crane who shares her name with a river flowing through Kachchh, is eager to see the exotic land. She has heard many stories about Kachchh from her family and friends. They have regularly migrated every year from Central Asia to the Indian subcontinent to escape the harsh winters. While flocking across a vast area of salt filled land, Khari gets abandoned by the rest when she stops to relish the white beauty.

Luckily she befriends a wild ass endemic to the rann. She sets off an expedition to a foreign land. She learns about the Rann, Bets, Agarias, Chhari Dhandh Wetlands, Banni Grasslands, Chinkara Wildlife Sanctuary and the flora and fauna found there.

Khari Journeys Through Kachchh is Full of Surprises

The book has many details that are quite surprising. The swimming camels, the camel haircut competition, amphibious fishes and salty trees are just stupendous. I have never even heard of them before.

This encyclopedia of the Rann of Kuchchh sneaks in tons of interesting information. All of this is told through the thrilling story of a lost demoiselle crane. The heartwarming reunion of Khari with her flock sure deserves a mention. We loved the narrative of Sujatha and Shruthi and the puzzles that made the book interesting.

The authors create a love for Kachchh through their story. They highlight the threats faced by Kachchh due to human interventions. They also suggest ideas and ways in which younger generation could raise their voices for conservation of natural lands. Wish we had more such books for each region as part of the local education syllabus in schools.
