Mixed Dal Tadka

June 06, 2017

Dal is one among the staple and traditional diet in India. Dal pairs well with both rice and roti and makes it a healthy food as dal plays a primary source of protein for the vegetarians and vegans. Today I am going to share a mix dal tadka with zucchini.

Dal Tadka

Traditional plain dal tadka or dal fry doesn't call for any vegetables, but I always try to sneak up some veggies in the dal. Zucchini is one such veggie that blends nicely in the dal. You can use any other veggie and mash them up to along with dal. But for this one, I did not mash and also the other interesting thing about this recipe is I used five different dal like in panch mel dal. I used 1 tbsp of toor dal, 1 tbsp of moth dal, 1 tbsp of channa dal, 1 tbsp of moong dal and 1 tbsp of masoor dal.

Look at this dal mix. Isn't it colorful? You can involve your child in doing the prep-work for this recipe. You can teach your little ones about the different varieties of dal available in India, and you can come up with some color games involving dal.

Here is the simple recipe that I tried,

Ingredients:

    • Toor Dal - 1 tbsp

    • Moth Dal - 1 tbsp

    • Channa Dal - 1 tbsp

    • Moong Dal - 1 tbsp

    • Masoor Dal - 1 tbsp

    • Water - 2 cups

    • Garlic - 2 cloves

    • Zucchini - 1

    • Oil - 2 tsps

    • Cumin seeds - 1 tbsp

    • Red Chilli - 2

    • Turmeric Powder - 1/2 tsp

    • Hing - 1/2 tsp

    • Salt - 1.5 tsps

    • Chopped Onion - 1/4 cup

    • Chopped Cilantro - 1 tbsp

    • Jaggery - a small piece

Steps:

      • Wash all the dals and pressure cook along with garlic cloves and turmeric powder by adding 1 cup of water.

      • Let it cool down and mash the dal nicely.

      • In a kadai or pan, add the oil and once the oil is hot add cumin seeds, hing.

      • Break the red chilies into two and add it to the tempering. As the mustard seeds start to splutter, add the chopped onions and cook until translucent.

      • Then add the chopped zucchini and salt and cook for 3 to 4 minutes.

      • At this stage, add the mashed dal and jaggery and 1 cup of water.

    • Let it simmer over low flame for 10 minutes and finally add chopped cilantro and turn the heat off.

    • That's is dal is ready. Serve hot with rice or roti.

Notes:

    • Instead of five different dals, you can just add one variety or mix and match as per your preference.

    • Instead of zucchini, you can include watery vegetables like cucumber, bottle gourd, etc.

    • Adjust salt and spices as per your preference.
